Kicking off cultural connection at Yokota Soccer Exchange
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan – The soccer fields at Yokota Middle School (YMS) became a hub of international camaraderie as student-athletes from the local community gathered for a high-energy Soccer Exchange Event May 2, 2026.
The event brought together 20 Japanese students and six coaches from Fussa Daiichi JHS and Fussa Daisan JHS to compete and connect with their American counterparts, led by Coach Greg Rodriguez, Coach Rudy Oliveira, Counselor Skip Bennett, and Wing Commander Col. Richard McElhaney. The day was defined by more than just goals and assists; it served as a vital bridge between the base and its neighboring city.
The visiting Japanese students and coaches expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to play at YMS. Many noted the excitement of experiencing an "amazing American school" environment firsthand.
The logistical success of the day was the result of dedicated coordination across districts. Nobukane Fujita, Training Technician and Coordinator for the Pacific East District, was instrumental in aligning the various groups.
"I truly enjoyed coordinating this opportunity with everyone from such different backgrounds and positions," said Fujita. "I deeply appreciate all the support that made this possible."
The event was hosted and organized by Mr. Greg Rodriguez, a 7th-grade teacher at YMS and the adviser for the Soccer Squad. Through his leadership, the students were able to find common ground on the pitch, proving that the love of the game transcends language barriers.
As the sun set on the exchange, the sentiment from both sides was clear: this is hopefully just the beginning of a long-standing athletic tradition between Yokota and Fussa.
